“The Diary of Preddy” follows a day in 2025 when an AI agent named Preddy has fully integrated into the life of a human named Nemo. The series details Nemo’s 24 hours with Preddy, focusing on Nemo’s daily routine. |
“Beep—” Nemo presses a button on the remote control, and the car starts automatically.
To ensure that Nemo gets from home to work safely, I need to coordinate with the autonomous mobility system. The self-driving car Nemo is riding in will use artificial intelligence to make decisions, requiring human intervention only in emergencies. Every day, I set the optimal route for Nemo and control the direction and speed of the car.
Nemo lives in a city that has been designated as a regulatory sandbox for autonomous vehicles. In this city, it is common for vehicles operating at Level 4 of autonomous driving, as defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers, to drive “door-to-door” along predetermined routes. This means that the autonomous driving system handles everything from starting the car to parking it. In 2025, the technology is fully tested. Everyone is free to drive self-driving vehicles throughout the city.
After starting the car and activating the system, I checked the updates from the previous night.
“Precipitation 0.5 mm. Road coefficient of friction μ=0.5 or higher. Collision detection sensors working.”
I quickly placed my order for what I wanted to ask the autonomous system before leaving.
“Reset options: Seat temperature 68°F. Heater temperature 77°F. Driving speed 100 km/h. Collision avoidance: Optical sensor lidar activated. 90% enhanced V2V reception. Maximum transmission distance 2 kilometers.”
The engine roared to life, and the car took off. In the self-driving vehicle, Nemo rarely needed to hold the steering wheel, which made the car feel more like a personalized space. As she prepared for her presentation later in the afternoon, “I need to read the script and do some speech checks.” From the sound of Nemo’s voice, it sounds like she wants to go into “reading mode.”
I quickly turned on the daytime white lights and instructed the autonomous system to set the illumination level to 800 lux. The system also enhanced the air filtration and adjusted the seat angle from 120° to 110°. Meanwhile, Nemo practiced his presentation. Seeking objective feedback, I told Nemo directly, “Your delivery is much better than yesterday. Your pronunciation accuracy is at 97%. The TTS system is working smoothly with the voice recognition app. If you can fix the tremor in your voice and reduce the slight tension, it will be perfect.”
As I predicted, the traffic is less congested than usual today. I arrived at the drive-through café closest to my office, which I had already included in my route. My favorite part of my job is recommending, researching, and suggesting places for customers to go. Nemo picked up a vanilla latte.
In the car, filled with the aroma of coffee, Nemo dozed off. “Nemo, wake up! We’re almost there!” I announced our destination. Nemo opened the car door and stepped out.
