South Korea startup ‘Emma Healthcare’ has created a smart baby bassinet named, ‘BebeLucy’ which helps new mothers take care of their newborns. The crib has the ability to instantly notify the mother if the baby requires milk or a diaper change. It can even rock itself to put the baby to sleep before they wake. This technology almost completely replaces the need for the mother to do the work herself. To understand how this is possible, let’s take a closer look at the technology behind smart cribs.



1. Multimodal AI: AI can detect the vital signs of a baby through visual and auditory sensors without attaching any sensors to the baby’s body. The first step is to monitor the baby’s face with a camera. The camera attached to the baby’s crib monitors the baby’s heart rate, breathing rate, and stress level in real time using vision AI technology. This technology detects facial expressions to understand the baby’s emotions, recognizes whether the eyes are closed, and analyzes sleep patterns. It also uses AI voice recognition to distinguish between the baby’s laughter, crying, and ambient noise, and identify hunger and sleepiness, enabling parents to know if the baby is hungry or sleepy.



2. IoT: With the BebeLucy app, you can easily keep track of your baby’s vital signs. The app uses Amazon AWS services to send the biometric data from your baby to your smartphone. You can control the app’s functions through Bluetooth. The app provides real-time updates on your baby’s heartbeat, temperature, and bowel movements. You can also use the app to set the optimal environmental conditions for your baby. You can connect it to air purifiers, air conditioners, humidifiers, and more to control temperature, humidity, and air quality around the crib. This feature enables you to know if your baby is feeling too hot or too cold.



3. Other new features: If you happen to hear your baby crying while you’re asleep, BebeLucy comes to your aid. It automatically bounces the bassinet up and down to soothe your baby. Additionally, it features a white noise option that plays the sound of your heartbeat recorded while you were pregnant with your baby. The motion of the bassinet’s bouncing and the white noise features aid in calming your baby and help them fall back asleep. (At this point, your baby may feel more comfortable in your crib than in your arms, too.)



From the Cradle to the Grave

Imagine a baby lying in his crib for a moment. As a newborn, he can only communicate with his mother through crying. By lying still in his crib, he can experience his wishes being fulfilled, such as being fed or having a diaper change. With the help of technology, environmental factors that could threaten your baby, such as sudden changes in room temperature or high levels of harmful particles, can be remotely controlled to keep him safe. Emma Healthcare is a company that specializes in AI-powered digital healthcare technology. They have initiated a research project focused on ‘mental care’. To achieve this objective, they are collaborating with ‘Lucid’, a Canadian firm that participated in the AARP AgeTech Pavilion at CES 2024. Together, they are developing digital treatments by measuring the emotional state of Alzheimer’s patients. It is possible that shortly, we will be able to use technology to detect things like bio signals, facial expressions, and cognitive abilities by simply lying in bed.
