Can we spread moss to Mars?

This plant can turn even a fire forest to green

ㆍAfter the worst wildfires in 100 years, Maui, Hawaii, needs over $5.3 billion for recovery costs.

ㆍReforestation is essential to combat global warming and preserve wildlife habitat.

‘Code of Nature’ thought moss was the fastest, least expensive way to restore forests.

The first land plant

Jaehong Park, the founder of Code of Nature, has observed the ability of lichens to survive in harsh environments. He believes that this ability can be the key to saving the planet from desertification due to the climate crisis. Mosses were the first plants to settle on land about 500 million years ago, and they have been able to survive for a long time due to their tenacious life and powerful reproduction. Code of Nature, based in South Korea, has developed and patented a technology that can quickly revive degraded forests with ‘moss spores’. The principle behind this technology is to first plant moss on land that has been turned into a desert by wildfires and then allow other plants to grow there.

Just spray it, FRK-M

The Forest Recovery Kit with Moss (FRK-M) is an environmentally friendly kit for restoring forests after a disaster, developed by Code of Nature. This kit is made by artificially culturing and processing moss spores, which are similar to plant seeds. The spores are then dried and preserved in a dormant state by mixing nutrients and plant hormone solutions to accelerate their growth. To keep the moss spores inactive, they are stored in a refrigerated environment with no oxygen, at a temperature between 2℃~7℃(35.6℉~44.6℉).

The traditional method of forest restoration involves removing contaminated soil and transplanting trees. However, Code of Nature’s solution does not require this procedure. The FRK-M liquid kit can be easily diluted in water and applied to the affected forest after a disaster, without the need to remove burnt soil. Once applied, the moss traps fog and dew, which helps retain moisture and soil humidity. It also binds to nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus in the soil, which helps new plants grow roots and reproduce.

Let’s spread the moss to other planets beyond Earth!

Code of Nature’s forest restoration kit has the following effects.

1. save time: more than 30% less than traditional methods

2. reduce input resources: reduce labor required per hectare by more than 50%.

3. cost savings: one-seventh of the economic cost of inputs

Currently, FRK-M is being used in Korea to restore Jeju Oreum and reclaimed land on the west coast. In the future, Code of Nature plans to enter overseas markets such as the United States, Canada, and Australia, all of which have recently experienced major disasters due to climate change. Furthermore, Code of Nature’s ultimate dream is to take the moss kit to Mars. “As mosses have survived on Earth and created the natural environment we have today, we hopes to create nature on Mars with their own mosses.”
